Webinar #5 - Self-Healing Distributed Applications
Wednesday, February 23, 2005
R. Dale Asberry - judy.jini.org project lead, GizmoWerkz
Abstract
Jini network technology was created under the assumption that "the network cannot be ignored." By recognizing and providing mechanisms to handle latency, concurrency, and partial failure, Jini enables the development of robust, scalable distributed applications.
As Jini-based applications have been written, developers have run into a new set of problems. Specifically, version skew, service provisioning, and quality of service problems need to be accounted for and managed. This has resulted in a new maxim: "The environment cannot be ignored." The use of heuristic agents to provide feedback can greatly enhance the adaptability of a distributed application and enable self-healing.
