Webinar #11 - Simple Jini: The Harvester Application Container
Wednesday, January 18, 2006
Greg Trasuk Founder, StratusCom Manufacturing Systems
Abstract
Jini is a powerful technology that enhances the end-user's experience by removing the need for network configuration. It also gives developers a huge amount of flexibility in how they develop and deploy services. Unfortunately, developers (especially those new to Jini) can get lost in the details and complexities of making services work.
The Harvester application container provides a simple way to develop and deploy Jini applications. You build services using a servlet-like API, and the container handles some of the sticky issues in Jini - in particular it manages your codebase and provides an http server for codebase downloads, and provides the infrastructure services (like Reggie) required for Jini-based applications.
This webinar will introduce Harvester's unified deployment model and show how to develop services using Harvester. We will also show how Harvester can deploy services designed for the ServiceStarter framework, as well as services written in the Python language.
As a final treat, we'll discuss what's coming in the next release of Harvester and talk about how others can get involved in Harvester's development.
Greg Trasuk, P.Eng, MBA, is the founder of StratusCom Manufacturing Systems Inc, a company that uses Jini technology to deliver Manufacturing Awareness systems that help manufacturers maximize efficiency and profits on the plant floor. He is also the author of the Harvester Application Container.
