Announcing the Third Jini Community Meeting
The third Jini Community Meeting will be held Tuesday March 28, 2000 at the Westin Hotel in Santa Clara, California in conjunction with the O'Reilly Conference on Java. Unlike previous meetings we will not be covering technical topics, since they will be covered in depth at JavaOne in the summer. There will be no charge to attend the Jini Community Meeting.
In the morning we will discuss the Technical Oversight Committee, including its role and functions (see below), and instantiate the first one. There will probably be discussion on the topic of an executive board as well, which would serve as an implementor and enforcer of decisions, and which would present a human face for the Jini Community to the world. We will discuss the concept of an executive board, its roles, and how to select its members.
In the afternoon there will be a meeting of the Jini Marketing Council which is in the process of being formed. If you wish to be part of it please plan on attending.
This will be an important meeting because it will be when control of the technology is handed over to the community, but it will not be a technical meeting. So, please proxy your votes if you don't want to make a trip. (To proxy your votes, please send a note to either Richard P. Gabriel (rpg@steam.stanford.edu) or Ron Goldman (rgoldman@cs.stanford.edu) stating who has your vote.)
Finally to encourage you to stay on after the Jini Community Meeting to attend the O'Reilly Conference on Java, the O'Reilly folks are offering a discount of $300 off the regular registration fee.
Technical Oversight Committee Issues
The Technical Oversight Committee has two broadly specified roles according to the proposal voted in: One is to decide what goes into net.jini, and the other is to serve as an appeals body for any decision made by the two voting bodies. The first of these roles seems straightforward and mostly the subject of technical expertise, experience, and judgment. The latter requires something akin to what real court of appeals would have. We will need to decide a few things at this meeting:
- how members are chosen for the TOC. Initially we will have volunteers
- the term for each member
- the procedures the TOC will follow to make decisions, and to receive and adjudicate appeals
- the nature of TOC proceedings - for example, open or closed to the community
