What's Happening, Work in Progress, Links

The next Jini Community Meeting will be held March 28th in Santa Clara, California in conjunction with the O'Reilly Conference on Java. The main purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Technical Oversight Committee, including its role and functions, and instantiate the first one. Register now.

At the second Jini Community Meeting it was decided to have the entire community vote on a proposal to establish a formal process for making community-wide decisions. That vote has been held and the proposal was passed by 179 to 27. Over the next few months we need to finalize various aspects of the proposal and put it into effect.

Community discussion of the proposal and how it will be put into practice will take place on the jini-community@jini.org mailing list. Please refer to the paper On Decision-Making in the Jini Community by Richard P. Gabriel & Ron Goldman for some initial discussion of the proposal.

Special Interest Groups

So far two special interest groups have started up:

8/10/99 The next Jini Technology Printing meeting will be held on September 20 and 21 in Denver, Colorado. The primary focus will be discussion of the draft API spec which is currently available in the jpgwg user area of the Source Exchange on jini.org.

The Jini Printing Working Group has held two meetings that were attended by most of the major printing vendors as well as other interested parties. From those meetings as well as discussions on the jini-printing@jini.org mailing list, a draft specification has emerged. This spec, a work in progress, is available for viewing and comment in the jpgwg area of the Source Exchange on jini.org. The next meeting is scheduled for September 20 and 21 in Denver, Colorado.

A group focused on storage related services for Jini technology has held one meeting that was attended by many of the major storage vendors along with other interested companies. Currently each company is developing their own products that will offer different types of Jini services built a layer above basic storage services. A second meeting is being planned for October 20th during the second Community Meeting. (8/4/99)
